Katharine Ruby Thompson's Obituary
On September 19, 2025 Katharine Thompson went to be with her husband in heaven, she was 95. They were married 69 years on earth and now will be together for all eternity. Katharine, known by her friends as Kathy and affectionately by her family as Aunt Kitty, was a remarkable woman. Her stay here began on March 22, 1930 in Fort Valley Georgia, Peach County and she was the epitome of a perfect Georgia peach, a sweet southern belle. Her family was the most dear to her but many others knew her as their loving kindergarten teacher at Pinewood Acres school and others will remember her as the sweet beautiful woman that would help them with registration issues at the University of Miami.
Katharine was a very smart woman but she married young and didn’t have the opportunity to go to college. In the early years she worked to help support her husband to enable him to succeed in his business. Then it was all about her children. Daddy always provided the essentials but Mama worked to give us kids all of the extras. Every Christmas present would fill the living room and she would say ”I may not be able to do this every year” but every year the room was filled. Dad was the strict one Mama was the buffer. Her son had a little fishing boat that he would pull to the canal everyday to go fishing. One time he was in trouble and as punishment Dad restricted him and he wasn’t allowed to use the boat for a week. Well, that wasn’t going to stop Tom and he was determined to take the boat out anyhow so Mama went outside and sat in the boat so he couldn’t move it just to keep him from getting in further trouble.
When her oldest daughter was in tenth grade, she decided she wanted to attend the University of Miami. Even back then the school was very expensive but Katharine heard from one of her friends that if you worked at the university your children could attend free. She took a part time job at the school taking ID pictures; everyone loved her and within six months she was hired full time. Her children were able to go to the university but that story was only the beginning because twenty-eight years later she retired as the assistant registrar of the University of Miami. She wasn’t a college graduate she filled that position the old-fashioned way….she worked hard and earned it.
The only people she may have loved even more than her children…. certainly, as much.…. were her grandchildren. She couldn’t do enough for them always giving them friendly advice. In her final years she was blessed with three great grandchildren.
Katharine was very active in her church and was strong in her faith. She believed in Jesus Christ and the promise he made to her and others that living on earth was just a quick stopover while eventually living with him in heaven for all eternity. She didn’t fear death …she just wasn’t in any hurry.
She is survived by her children Linda (husband Randy), Tom (wife Cheryl), Lisa …her six grandchildren, Cameron, Richard, Jarred, Camden, Dalton and Susanne ….her great grandchildren, Xander, Levi and Micaela…her nephew Bill Pruit (wife Ileana, niece Susie and many grand nieces and nephews.
We love you Mama and you are forever in our hearts.
