JULIA HILL's Obituary
JULIA MATTESON HILL
Julie Hill, a longtime resident of Southern Pines, NC from 1979 to 2008, passed on in Miami, FL on September 27, 2014. She was born in Milford, Ct in 1919 and graduated from Weylister Jr. College For Girls in Milford. The wife of the late John Bernard Hill whom she met and married in Southern Pines, she spent a long and happy retirement in the Sandhills. She had been an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and the Civic Club and she greatly loved the Southern Pines community. Her later years were spent at St. Joseph’s before leaving in 2008 to live her last years close to her oldest daughter and grandchildren in Miami, FL.
Before retiring to Southern Pines, she lived in Center Moriches, NY where she had been married to Robert F. Matteson until his passing in 1975. There with her husband she raised their three children and managed a family business for over thirty years.
Julie Matteson Hill will be remembered as a loving, devoted mother and wife, devout Christian, grandmother, great-grandmother and faithful friend. She leaves behind three children in order of age: Kris M. Charlton of Miami, FL; Robbin M. McCarter (and husband Alan) of Hendersonville, NC and Col. Wallace E. Matteson (and wife Christine) of Leavenworth, KS as well as four grandchildren in FL and KS. The following poem about her written for her by her middle daughter expresses well how greatly she will always be loved:
A Mother’s Love
I remember your caring touch A love so sweet that meant so much Your thoughtful meals and sparkling home The light of faith with which you shone Your mother’s strength gave to us all The courage to rise whenever we fall. So I’ll love you forever As I have all along In my heart of hearts, You’ll never be gone. Memorial donations in her name can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or the ALS Recovery Fund in Coconut Grove, FL to honor her son-in-law, James T. Charlton, who died from ALS.
