Joseph Michael Scarcell's Obituary
SCARCELL, JOSEPH M., Born in Catskill, NY, passed away peacefully at home on December 16, 2011.
Joe proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. ARMY. During the war, he served as an M.P. and Medic in theatres throughout Europe, and the Pacific.
After WWII, he moved to Miami where he graduated from the University of Miami and where met & married his Scottish-born soul-mate Elizabeth. Joe supported the University of Miami Alumni, Hurricanes Football and was a member of the University of Miami "Old Timers" club.
A prominent insurance agent, Joe was highly respected in the business community for many years. He was a true entrepreneur and made the art of the sale look easy. Joe owned and operated a successful independent insurance agency for 35 years before his retirement. He was also the past President of the Professional Insurance Agents of Dade County.
A long time member of the Coral Gables Country Club and charter member & past Commodore of the Fleet, he was also involved with Spoonbills, Jockey Club, Elks Lodge and the American Legion. Joe was known as a charming, fun loving, charismatic person which is why he had so many friends. He loved boating, fishing and taught his son and daughter "the ropes" when they were young. He had a passion for gardening, cooking and in a group he was never without a great story for the amusement of all. Joe was a loving husband, a devoted father, and friend to the very end, Joe will missed dearly by all who's lives he touched.
Joe is survived by his lovely wife, Elizabeth, his son Michael (Susan), his daughter Linda Degrave (Daniel), and his sister Marie. He also has extended family in South Florida, New York, England and Scotland. Joe was predeceased by his brothers Leon, Anthony, Thomas, Louis, and his sister Evelyn.
His family will be holding a celebration of life memorial on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the VAN ORSDEL CORAL GABLES CHAPEL. For more information call 305-446-4412. Joe's final resting place will be at the South Florida V.A. National Cemetery with a full military service Jan. 6, 2012 at 11 am.
