Joseph H. (Buck) Seiverd

Died at home in Miami. Born in Cheshire, CT to Dr. Charles and Anne von Runnon Seiverd; raised in New Haven; graduated from Hillhouse H.S., sworn into Naval Reserve; attended MM Officers’ School at Ft. Trumbull, CT; served as deck officer during WWII in Pacific, Atlantic and Mediterranean theatres; honorable discharge from USCG. Buck then attended University of Wisconsin, earning a BS degree in History and English; MS degree in educational administration; his doctoral work concentrated on Thoreau and themes on nature in early 19th century American Literature. A committed unionist, he belonged to National Maritime Union: Masters, Mates and Pilots, and AFT. His academic career began at Madison Area Technical College in 1947 as a part-time instructor. In 1950 he became Assistant Registrar and General Studies instructor. In the 60’s he became Registrar overseeing initial accreditation by North Central Association. He then was appointed Director of Student Services and the first Deputy Director of the College. Based on his knowledge of Cooper Union in NYC, he was a strong advocate for community colleges and promoted them under the Wisconsin System. He had direct input into development of new Truax campus opening in 1986. On retirement he fulfilled his lifelong dream of living aboard a bluewater sailboat while cruising the Caribbean and gunk holing in the Keys. Beloved husband, esteemed colleague and inseparable sailing mate of Rosalind; loving father of Cassandra, Kirsten and Eric. Pre-deceased by sisters Marie, Dorothea, Victory, Betty and brother Charles. Memorials may be made to MATC Foundation. Ashes to be scattered in Gulf Stream. “We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with sleep.”
