Joseph W. Eckhart's Obituary
ECKHART,
Joseph W., Age 94, of Miami, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away at his home on August 24, 2013. Joe was born in Camden, NJ and raised in Philadelphia. After he graduated from West Philadelphia Catholic Boys High School he joined the U.S.Navy and eventually received orders to report to Richmond NAS, Miami during WWII (now Zoo Miami), where he served as a navigator on blimps used in anti submarine warfare travelling between Miami and Brazil. After being stationed in South Florida he determined, like many veterans after the war, to remain in Miami. Initially he purchased a Sunoco gas station at So. Dixie Hwy and Bird Road. After a few years he sold the station and returned to aviation going to work for Pan American Airways, Flight Engineer until his retirement in 1978. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Elsie Marie in 2007. He is survived by his son James M. Eckhart (Cynthia), daughter Claire A. Powell (Buddy) 4 grandchildren, Brian Powell (Mylene), great granddaughter, Maika ,Kevin Powell, James Jr. and Jennifer Eckhart. Visitation 7 – 9 pm Thursday, Aug 29th at VAN ORSDEL CORAL GABLES CHAPEL, 4600 SW 8th Street. Burial Mass 10:30 am Friday, Aug 30th at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 5909 NW 7th Street Miami. Interment – Flagler Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions in his memory be made to the charity of your choice.
