Joseph H. Bylinski's Obituary
Joseph H. Bylinski, 74, died unexpectedly in Miami, Florida on October 13, 2021. He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on September 1, 1947 and was the son of the late Henry Bylinski and Josephine (Kijowski) Bylinski. He graduated from The College of the Holy Cross and received his M.B.A. from Northeastern University. After receiving his CPA and working in public accounting for three years, he entered The Ohio State University where he earned his Ph.D. in accounting in 1980. Joe then began his 35 year teaching career at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill before retiring in 2016. His teaching reached near and far. At Kenan-Flagler, he taught in both the daytime, evening, and weekend MBA programs, Executive MBA Program, On-line MBA Program, Advanced Management Program, Program for Technical Managers, Finance-for-Non Financial Managers and many other in house/custom programs. He won the MBA Teaching Award for the day program in 1990 and the weekend program in 2003. In addition to teaching across all of UNC’s MBA programs, “Joey B” led programs for a wide range of corporate and government organizations including Nucor, Swedish Institute of Management, The Department of Navy, Eastman Chemical Company, Honeywell, Financial Analysts Review, Westinghouse, and Carolina CPA Review among others. His teaching and consulting programs enabled him to travel extensively, primarily to Asia and several European countries. He also taught at Duke University’s School of Law, UNC School of Law, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, and the University of Miami. His students will surely remember his sense of humor, knitted ties, and making accounting fun!
While at Ohio State, he discovered his love of running and enjoyed doing so for many years with his UNC colleagues and oftentimes with his daughter. He enjoyed his summers at the family lake house in Massachusetts, especially taking out his trusty 8HP boat for its daily spin.
Joe is survived by his wife, Carol, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, daughter, Lauren McCarthy and her husband, Greg, of Brooklyn, New York, and several cousins.
