JOHN "JACK" MILLER THOMSON's Obituary
COL. JOHN “JACK” MILLER THOMSON
September 9, 1931 – March 24, 2023
Jack Thomson was a true gentleman, and his kind and compassionate nature touched the lives of all who knew him. As a veteran of the Korean War, Col. Thomson dedicated his life to serving his country and protecting the freedoms we all cherish and in 2018 was inducted into the Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame.”
He was a passionate supporter of the military community. During his 64 years as an attorney, Jack did pro bono work on behalf of homeless veterans, and veterans who came to him because he respected their military service and was personally committed to their needs. He served as Judge Advocate of the American Legion Post 98 in Coral Gables. He worked to promote a safer community through the Coral Gables Citizens Crime Watch, a group that his wife, Former Mayor Dorothy Thomson founded in 1981.
Married for 70 years, Jack was always supportive of Dorothy’s love for public service as the first and only female mayor of Coral Gables. Together, they made an indelible impact on their beloved city, and their legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Jack was actively involved in organizations such as the Junior Orange Bowl and the Kiwanis and the Army-Navy Club of Coral Gables, focused on the welfare of children and youth. He served as president of those organizations, as well as the Miami Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. He graduated from University of Miami School of Law and was a member of the prestigious Iron Arrow Society.
Jack has been a member of Granada Church since 1950, serving as an Elder and Chairman of the Board of Granada Day School. He and Dorothy were the first couple married at Granada, and their daughter, June, was the first child baptized in the new sanctuary when it was completed, in 1961.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, civic leader, church elder, private pilot, boater, career soldier, attorney and patriot – Col. Thomson was a pillar of the community and the Thomson family patriarch. He will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
