NUPOC honors the life and intellectual legacy of orthopedic surgeon John Bowker, MD, who died on October 28, 2020 at the age of 92. Dr. Bowker contributed seminal knowledge and advanced the fields of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Prosthetics and Orthotics. He authored and edited numerous medical texts, including the Atlas of Amputations and Limb Deficiencies, The Diabetic Foot, and the Atlas of Limb Prosthetics. He was a long time contributor to the NUPOC Continuing Medical Education short course for physicians and therapists and lectured worldwide at numerous educational events and medical conferences.
Dr. Bowker was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a member of the Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Association, the American Orthopaedic Association, and the International Standards Organization. He was an active member of the U.S. ISPO Member Society and an honorary member of The American Academy of Orthotics and Prosthetics.
NUPOC has lost a valued teacher, colleague and friend in Dr. Bowker, but his work continues to inform and educate new generations of physicians and prosthetist-orthotists.
