JOEL DAVIS's Obituary
Davis, Joel (1927-2017)
Joel Davis, age 89, passed away on August 11, 2017. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Joel served in the US Army as a member of the 27th Infantry, the Wolfhounds, and spent 18 months stationed in Japan. After the service he returned to NYU where he played basketball for the Washington Square team and studied textiles. He was a self-made man, working in the garment industry for over 60 years, supplying interlinings, collars and cuffs to the the men’s shirt trade. He loved every minute of it, and worked well into his 80’s. Joel began his first business, Majestic Lining Corp. in the 1960’s, founded Chel-Tex in the 80’s, and finally Davis & Associates. He also represented Gygli Interlining, promoting their products in United States. He ran several factories, and his claim to fame was that he visited every shirt manufacturing plant from Maine to Florida (as well as the Caribbean) during his extensive travels. He was a member of the Textile Salesmen’s Association of both New York and Miami, and the American Apparel Manufacturers Association. He adjudicated Textile and Apparel cases for the American Arbitration Association, and served as a consultant for major textile companies.
He was an ardent tennis player and loved a good game of doubles. He served as the Commodore of the Kings Bay Yacht Club, and as Vice-Commodore of the Country Club of Coral Gables Fleet. An avid boater for most of his adult life, he doesn’t believe that there are any fish in Biscayne Bay….
Beloved husband of Marilyn Kornreich Davis (1928-2005), loving father and confidant of Marcie Cheryl Davis, he is also survived by granddaughters Melodie Davalos and Heather Lynne Bessell, great-grandchildren Hunter and Lilyana Davalos, and the eagerly anticipated Rowan James Rodgers, arriving momentarily.
A celebration of his life will take place for friends and family at 4:00 PM on his 90th birthday, November 9, 2017. Call (305) 323-2363 for more information.
