JOAN LOREY JEWELL's Obituary
Joan Lorey Jewell (88) passed away on January 26, 2016 in Miami, FL. Joan was born on September 19, 1927 in Staten Island, New York to John A. and Hilda (nee Lorey) Ryan. She grew up on Staten Island, and then attended George Washington University in Washington DC, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree. In Washington DC, she met William F. Jewell, III, and they married on August 6, 1949. The couple lived in Washington DC, and Traverse City, Michigan, before settling in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They loved to travel and visited all of the continents except Antarctica! Joan worked for Eibler & Associates Realtors in Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan Graduate Library, the US Passport Office in Detroit, and at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, from which she retired in 1993. She was active in the American Association of University Women, International Neighbors, and other civic organizations in Ann Arbor. Her family was always at the center of her life, and she was a source of love, wisdom, and understanding to her family, who always counted on her. Her daughters will always remember lively games of SPIT and CRAZY EIGHTS, watching Hockey Night in Canada, drinking root beer floats at New Year’s, and hearing great Latin American jazz around the house. Joan moved to Hollywood, FL, in 1997, after the death of her beloved husband, Bill, in 1996. She loved living where she could see the ocean every day, and enjoyed playing scrabble and knitting with friends in Hollywood. She is survived by her daughters, Joan Jewell of Miami, FL, Rev. Karen Jewell-vanBuskirk of Oshkosh, WI, and Patricia (Dan) Holland of Plover, WI. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Elizabeth (Brendon Dusel) Jewell vanBuskirk and her great granddaughter Penelope Dusel of West Roxbury, MA. Memorial services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 2919 Van Buren St., Hollywood, FL on Saturday, February 27 at 1:00 pm with visitation at noon; and at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 1100 E Murdock Ave., in Oshkosh, WI on Saturday, April 30, at 2:00 pm with visitation at 1 pm. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Ann Arbor in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, Joan would wish for donations to be made to Heifer International (heifer.org) or the American Cancer Society (cancer.org/donate), particularly the Broward County branch.
