JOAN CRAIG DICKERT's Obituary
DICKERT, Joan Craig departed this life peacefully at the age of 86 after a long battle with dementia. She was born a Key West “Conch” when her mother Adella Craig (also a Conch) travelled to Key West for her birth. Though Joan lived in Miami, she visited No Name Key often with her aunt and uncle (Grace and Carlton Craig). She attended Coral Gables Elementary, Ada Merritt Junior High and graduated from Miami High School in 1948. At the young age of 14, after her father Cecil Burton Craig unexpectedly passed away, Joan obtained a special driver’s license in order to work in the family business, the Craig Carbon and Ribbon Company, delivering and installing typewriter ribbons to Miami businesses. She also found time, to be a cheerleader, play tennis and volleyball, and be a member of a sorority and the honor society at Miami High. Joan was ranked #2 in the State of Florida for Junior Girls tennis in 1947. After graduation she married Leon Mikesell, lately from Ohio, and had three children, Barbara, Larry and Linda. Joan worked for 20 years as an insurance underwriter for Kahn-Carlin Insurance Company. She worked hard to support her children but always found the time to support them as Girls Scout troop leader, room parent, softball coach as well as playing women’s league volleyball. Joan was a founding member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Coral Gables in 1950 where sang in the choir for 55 years. She loved to garden and could regularly be seen working on the church grounds. Joan was also a member of the Foot Loose Country Cloggers and performed for parties and weddings in South Florida. In 2012 she moved to San Francisco to live with her daughter and was beloved by her family, friends and caretakers for her smile, ribald humor and sense of grace.
Joan is survived by her daughters Barbara and Linda, grandchildren Christopher, Eric, Nicole, Brandon, Michelle, and Natalie and her great grandchildren Kristiana and Juliana. A visitation will be on Saturday, October 7th at 1:00pm – 2:00pm with the funeral services to follow at 2:00pm at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 3930 S. Le Jeune Road, Coral Gables. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Park North Cemetery.
