James Eason Elk's Obituary
Elk, James Eason, born February 11, 1938, died Sunday, August 21 of a heart attack. Known to his friends and former students as Coach, Jim spent 25 years as a football, track and golf coach at his beloved Hialeah High, where he continued to attend games well after his retirement even as recently as the state baseball championship game this June. Coach Elk was a standout football player at Miami High from which he graduated in 1956. He attended and played football at FSU and at Arkansas State University where he graduated from the college Business Administration. Jim was a 1st Lieutenant in the Marines Corps after College and he remained proud of his military service. After he retired from teaching in 2003, he worked with several benevolent programs, including Special Olympics, Dade School Disability Program, First Tee Program at the Melresse Golf Club in Miami. Also, in July 1987, he became the first American coach of the first French American Football team, " the Artilleurs de Metz" in Metz,(East of France). He loved to make other people happy. He is survived by his wife Marie-Luce, his son John, in Jonesboro (Ar),his step-daughter Beatrice (in France) , his sister Diane Bailey in Savannah (Ga), his six grand-children and was predeceased by his daughter Betsy. Coach Elk will be remembered as a kind, generous, loyal friend and a wonderful husband and father.
