James Phillip Mullins Jr.'s Obituary
James Phillip "Jim" Mullins Jr., a compassionate soul and dedicated advocate for recovery, passed away on April 5, 2026, in Miami, Florida. Born on December 28, 1957, in Cleveland, Ohio, Jim lived a life marked by resilience, faith, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.
Jim grew up in Wickliffe, Ohio, where he attended Warden Elementary School, Wickliffe Junior High, and graduated with the Wickliffe High School Class of 1976. His early years were shaped by a love of music and sports—passions that would remain with him throughout his life.
In the early 2000s, Jim embarked on a transformative journey toward sobriety. With the guidance of his sponsor John and his steadfast faith in God, he achieved recovery and found his true calling: helping others overcome addiction. For over two decades, Jim worked as a counselor and therapist, offering support and hope to countless individuals striving for a better life. His compassion and dedication left an indelible mark on those he helped.
Jim's love for music was evident in his joy of playing bass guitar and his appreciation for rock music from the 1970s and 1980s. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was a devoted fan of the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Cleveland Indians—always referring to them by their original name. An avid reader with a thirst for knowledge, Jim explored topics ranging from current events to history and spirituality.
His faith played a central role in his life. Jim believed deeply in God's presence during challenging times and found solace in the Serenity Prayer throughout his recovery journey. He embraced "A Course in Miracles" as a path to spirituality and lived with gratitude for the blessings he received.
Jim also had a profound love for animals. He was passionate about helping feral cats in the Miami community and supported rescue organizations through donations. His kindness extended beyond people to all living creatures.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Norma Jo Parrish and James Phillip Mullins Sr.; his maternal grandparents Mary (Nana) and Brian Parrish; his paternal grandparents Gilda and Cicero Mullins; and his stepfather Edward Cencula.
He is survived by his sister Kimberly Ann Cencula; his Aunt Sandy; several cousins; and Ana, his loving partner of 18 years. Their bond was one of enduring love and mutual support.
Jim's legacy is one of compassion, perseverance, and faith. He touched many lives through his work with those battling addiction while inspiring others with his passion for music, sports, learning, and service to animals. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held on April 17, 2026, from 05:00 PM to 08:00 PM at Van Ordsel Funeral Home 11220 N Kendall Dr
