DR JAMES C COSMIDES's Obituary
COSMIDES, JAMES CONSTANTINE, son of Constantine George Cosmides and Penelope Cosmides was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on December 31, 1942. He received his B.A. degree from West Virginia University, serving as an executive member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the University’s student government. In 1967 he earned his Medical Doctorate from West Virginia University School of Medicine. After completing his internship in Mixed Medical-Surgery at University Hospital in Morgantown, WV., Cosmides served in the US Navy Marine Corp in Viet Nam from 1968-1969. As a Lieutenant Commander he was decorated with the Viet Nam Defense Medal, Campaign Medal, Service Medal and Combat Action Medal. Upon returning to the United States he completed his Residency in Dermatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1973. Dr. Cosmides was certified by the American Board of Dermatology, and the American Board of Dermatology & Pathology with special qualification on Dermatopathology. In 1973 Dr. Cosmides joined Dr. Wiley Sams’ practice at the Ingraham Building in downtown Miami. By 1985 Dr. Cosmides was in private practice and had relocated his office to Coral Gables, where he continued to see patients until the day of his passing. In addition to his own practice, Dr. Cosmides was on staff at Victoria Hospital and Cedars Medical Center as an active staff member in the 80s and 90s. In 1988 he served as President and Chief of Staff at both institutions. Additionally, he was on staff at Doctor’s Hospital from 1993 until the time of his death. Always committed to helping others, he served on the vestry at St. Phillips Episcopal Church from 1994-1995, on the board of trustees at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church from 1996-1998 and later as a board member at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral. As a proud veteran he served on the board of the Army-Navy Club of Coral Gables from 1989-1991 and as the President in 1992. Not one to pass up the opportunity to enjoy a glass of fine wine with friends, he joined and served as the Grand Senechal of the La Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin and was an active member of the International Food and Wine Society. Saturday mornings were reserved for hitting the links with The Blazer Boys; and Sundays for faith and family. He passed away peacefully September 2, 2015, the day after celebrating 36 years of marriage to his devoted wife Candice Taylor Cosmides. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three loving children: Regina Taylor Cosmides, Christopher James Cosmides and Nathalie Evelyn Cosmides. As well as sister, Maritsa Cosmides Pastis, M.D., brother-in-law, Nicholas Pastis, M.D., brother George Cosmides, sister-in-law, Libby, brother-in-law, Henry Hamilton Taylor III, and nephew Nicholas J. Pastis, Jr., M.D. Services will be held at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 11 am on Saturday, September 5, 2015 located at 2401 SW 3rd Avenue, Miami, FL 33129. His internment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Dr. Cosmides’ name to either the American Red Cross, St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, or Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation.
