Ianthe M. Horton's Obituary
Horton, Ianthe M., “Babe”, resident of Coral Gables, Florida since 1975, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2009, at the age of 97. She was born in Syracuse, New York on July 26, 1912, into the prominent Eckel Family. She earned a degree in elementary education and taught school for 9 years prior to her marriage to Paul R. Horton in 1941. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, when the nurses were sent to the front lines to care for the troops, she volunteered as a nurses’ aide at St. Joseph Hospital. Babe shared a wonderful, happy life with Paul, her husband of 36 years, who predeceased her in 1977. Her family and friends will remember her lovingly as an avid reader and bridge player, a caring, kind Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, trusting friend, patient listener, and elegantly dressed to the nines at all times. She was a member of the Coral Gables Country Club as well as an active member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and Student Center from its early days where she was a member of the Ladies Guild. In the last years of her life she was lovingly attended and cared for by Verona Khani and Pauline Thoywell-Henry, to whom the family will always be grateful. She is survived by her two children, Robert P. Horton and Kathleen Basáñez, two grandchildren, Michelle (Carlos) Casanova of Cape Coral, Florida, and Robert (Jacqueline) Basáñez of Arlington, Virginia, and two great grandsons, Kevin and Patrick Casanova. A Mass in celebration of her life was held at St. Augustine Catholic Church and Student Center in Coral Gables on January 2, 2010. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Syracuse, New York in the Spring. Ianthe will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
