Harry Pyott Day
Harry Pyott Day, Ed.D, of 12250 N. 22nd Street, Tampa, Fla. died on Dec. 12, 2011.
Born in Grand Island, Fla. on March 12, 1924, Day was the son of Harry Robinson and
Roslyn Pyott Day. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Miami in 1947 and his master’s degree from Florida State University in 1951. He received his Doctor of Education degree from FSU in 1957. He volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy (1943-45).
Following graduation from the University of Miami, Day married classmate Dorothy Jane Patton of Erwin, Tenn., and taught English and history at Miami Jackson High School (1947-51). In 1952, he was awarded a one-year internship with the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C.
At Florida State University, Day served as assistant to the business manager and director of auxiliaries (1955-57); director of the University Laboratory School (1958-60); and associate dean of students before receiving a leave of absence to serve as director of the Salzburg Seminar in American Studies in Salzburg, Austria (1961-64). He returned to FSU as dean of students (1964-66).
In 1966, Day was appointed as the first director of The New England Center for Continuing Education located at the University of New Hampshire. He coordinated programming with the six state universities of New England for ten years.
In 1976, he was appointed president of Spring Hill Center, a public affairs conference center in Minneapolis, Minn. (1976-80). Following this assignment, he was appointed as the first director of the Ucross Foundation, Ucross, Wyo., which served as a public affairs conference center and scholar-artist in residence program (1981-84). Before returning to Florida for retirement, he served as project leader at the Asolo State Theatre in Sarasota, Fla.
Day served as deacon in the Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Kiwanis Club. He was a member of Psi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi. He is listed in the 1977 Who’s Who in the East.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Jane Day; a son, Stephen Patton Day and his wife, Karen McCord Day, of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Sydney Day Fanning, and her husband,
Michael Ian Fanning, of Clermont-Ferrand, France; and two granddaughters, Ryan Taylor Fanning of Columbia, S.C. and Shayne Allyson Fanning of Spartanburg, S.C. His sister, Mary Samuel Drawdy, resides in Deland, Fla.
Services will be held for the public at the mausoleum in Woodlawn Park Cemetery South 11655 S.W. 117th avenue, Miami, Fla. on Saturday January 7th 2012 at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the scholarship fund at Florida State University.
