Harold Henry Deveaux's Obituary
By Billy Shores;
Harold “Harry” Deveaux, 92, died peacefully on May 8, 2017 just 9 days shy of his 92nd birthday. He was born in Springfield, MA and entered service with the American Army in August 1943. He served overseas in the European Theatre of Operations, during which time he was awarded the Purple Heart and the EAME Service Ribbon. Harry was retired from Pan Am where he had been employed since the 50’s. His longtime lover was Woodrow “Woody” Mallard, whom he met in Provincetown, MA. They moved to Miami in the early 50’s. and were together for 54 years until Woody’s passing in 2005 at 87 years of age. Harry enjoyed his retirement days, often taking elaborate cruises with family and close friends. He had traveled the world with Pan Am during the 1950’s through the early 1970’s. He was also an active member of the Miami Elks 948 where he held the position of “Honorary Life Membership” and worked significantly over the years on the lodge renovation projects, and sponsored many new members. He managed the annual Super Bowl football pools and the “horse races,” raising in excess of $500,000 for upgrades, wide screen TV’s and patio furniture for the Elks Club. He was a member of the House Committee, always working behind the scenes as “Mr. Clean-Up” as he put it. His favorite hangouts for libations included Bonefish, Devon, and Bahama Breeze where he is greatly missed by dear friends who are customers and employees of these fine Miami establishments. Harry’s legacy will always be remembered by his tips left in $2 bills, as well as the famous “Harryisms” which include: “I accept graciously”, “Subject to change without notice”, and “The first cocktail is the right eye opener, the second is the left eye opener, and the third is the muscle relaxer which we don’t count” - just to name a few.
In lieu of a visitation and service after his passing, a Celebration of Life will be hosted at Devon Seafood on Saturday, Nov 11th from 3-7pm at Devon Seafood and Steak, 11715 Sherry Lane, Town & Country Mall, Miami, Florida 33183, with good friends by invitation and RSVP requested.
