Glenda Sherer Crawford's Obituary
Dr. Glenda Sherer Crawford , age 77, died Monday morning September 26, 2011 at University of Miami Hospital. Glenda was born to Clay Olin and Fannie Smith Sherer on January 23, 1934, in Jasper, AL. A graduate of Walker County High School in Jasper, Glenda went on to earn her bachelors degree and her masters degree from Florence State Teachers College. Glenda began her professional career as a teacher at 19 years of age. Glenda later earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Educational Management Systems. After moving to Miami, Florida in 1958, Dr. Crawford taught calculus and algebra at Southwest Miami Senior High School. Dr. Crawford opened Miami Killian Senior High School as the chairman of the Math Department. From Killian, she moved to Hialeah Senior High School in her first administrative role. She later served as Assistant Principal at Miami Coral Park. In 1976 she returned to Southwest as Dade County’s first female senior high school principal, where she remained for 12 years. Upon her retirement from the Florida education system, Glenda returned to her hometown to serve as the principal of Maddox Middle School in Jasper for the next ten years. In June of 1998, she returned to Miami and took an administrative position at Gulliver Academy where she served until her final retirement in 2009. While in Florida she was Vice-President of the Florida High School Athletic Association Executive Board, and was the first female on that board. She also served as Chairman of the Senior High Principals in Miami. During her tenure as a principal in Alabama, she served as the President of the Jasper Rotary Club, and was also the first female elected to that role. Dr. Crawford was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her beloved son, Douglas Wayne Crawford of Miami, brother Wayland Smith Sherer, and sister-in-law Willene Banks Sherer of Jasper, and numerous other cousins, nieces, and nephews. Visitation for Dr. Crawford 10:30 am until Service time 11:30 am Wednesday, September 28 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove.
