Julian Crawford
Not sure why but this morning, Sunday May 17. 2026 I wondered what ever happened to Gervais Clarke who I went to school's with at Calabar. He was about 4 or 5 years ahead of me and I remember him as our Head Boy back then. Last time I saw him was I believe in 1961 or 1962 at the Jamaica National Stadium where US sprinter Bob Hayes was competing. Gervais had left Calabar then and I was still there. He saw me and we spoke briefly at this track event. I was 16 and dressed in a suit my mother had sent for me from the US. When he saw me, I remember him saying to me “Crawford, you have a younger brother, give it to him.” He was referring to my suit as he believed it was too short for me 😃. Now today May 17, 2026 I learned of his passing in 2022. He sure made a mark and had a great influence on many people. In 1964 I returned to the US where I was born. Like Gervais Calabar had a great impact on my education and life. It’s ironic that in 1982 he lived in Orange. New Jersey when I also lived in East Orange, New Jersey. Wish I had known since as Calabar Old Boys would have made every effort to connect with him then. Rest In Peace Gervais Clarke, Rest In Peace. You touched many people.
