Gertrude R. Freeman's Obituary

Gertrude Irene Rzeszotarski Freeman died August 12, 2010. She was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, on November 15, 1921, the second child of Janela and John Rzeszotarski. She graduated from Holyoke High School, and shortly thereafter she struck out for California, where she met Edward Freeman. They were married after World War II, and their son was born in 1947. The family moved to Florida in 1957 and to Miami in 1959. Gertrude was a working mother until 1966, when she enrolled at the University of Miami, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1971. She earned a master’s degree in education from Florida International University in 1976. She taught English at Mays Middle School in Miami from 1971 until she retired in 1986. She was her teachers’ union representative at Mays and inspired many students. During her working life, she was also a local actress and coached students informally and in yearbook activities. In retirement she was an active member of Phi Lambda Pi and a loving and inspiring grandmother as well as an excellent caregiver to her husband, who died in 2002. She read avidly and was an enthusiastic writer and memoirist. She is survived by her loving son, Carl, her daughter-in-law, Bonnie, two adoring grandchildren, Rosalie and Holly, and many fond friends.
