GERALD PINNAS's Obituary
Gerald (Jerry Pinnas) passed on Saturday, February 10, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with Cancer. He was born on April 11, 1940, in Newark, NJ, the eldest child of Abraham and Mollie Pinnas. The family moved to Miami in 1956. Jerry graduated from Miami High School with honors and the University of Miami where he earned his BS and MD degrees. He was elected to the prestigious Iron Arrow honor society and AOA Medical Honor Society at UM. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at Baylor University, after which he practiced as an eye surgeon in South Miami for over 30 years.
He loved life, his family and his friends. His many, many friends spanned years, periods in his life and geographies, attracted by his sincerity, astounding intellect, wide ranging interests, and wit.
What began as a hobby soon evolved into an avocation as he studied and learned about fine wines. He became a wine connoisseur and collector, traveling the world with his family and his “wine friends” in pursuit of his passion. Many happy times were spent in wine discussions and entertaining friends and colleagues who shared his interest.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Susan; sister Lynne Schere (Les); sons Nat Pinnar, MD (Ximena) and Clark Knapp; daughters Beverly Pinnas and Elise Gladstone; grandchildren Sloane Knapp, Reese Knapp, Antonia Pinnar. and Ylena Gladstone; and, his cherished friends. All are deeply saddened by his passing.
A memorial service will be held at Van Orsdel Coral Gables Chapel on Wednesday, February 14 at 1 pm. Contributions may be made to University of Miami School of Medicine, Class of 1964 Scholarship Fund.
