George H. Campbell's Obituary
CAMPBELL
George H. 84, passed away February 9, 2009. Theater, art, antiques and writing are the arenas in which George has been ringmaster. After graduating from the University of Miami, during which he hosted two local radio shows, he went to Boston where he was a columnist for the Boston Herald-Traveler. He opened his own public relations firm that handled the famous Brattle Theatre Company, the New England Opera Company and the Music Circus. Eventually, he headed back to Miami to produce a season of shows at the Dade County Auditorium and became assistant to the late George Engle, founder of the Coconut Grove Playhouse. Victor Borge, the famed Danish pianist and humorist was the third show in the inaugural season. He lured George to head north once again, this time to manage his worldwide career. George opened George Campbell Artists Management in New York as well as in Hollywood and London. He clocked more than 300,000 miles annually, producing and managing shows around the world. Borge was one of the brightest stars in a clientele of international talents that included Judy Garland, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Tallulah Bankhead and many others… As he traveled the world, he developed and eye for antiques, filling his New York townhouse as well as several warehouses…little did he realize it would lead him to a new career. He opened his first antique shop in the historic Douglas Entrance. Later he expanded to property he owned on Commodore Plaza. George gained a reputation as a promoter. What is less known is how generously he promotes the arts. During his term as President of Friends of Art, he raised the greatest amount ever for the Friends’ treasury. He is a life member of both the Vizcaya Foundation and the National Society of Arts & Letters. Little time was left for his major passion: painting. He gave up all previous careers four years ago to become a full time painter, opening his own studio in South Miami. There he spent his days painting and loving life. For his enthusiasm, for his generosity and for caring, George Campbell was named Man of the Year by the Lowe Museum. A visitation will be held (today) 5 – 7 pm Tuesday at VAN ORSDEL CORAL GABLES. Funeral Service 3:00 pm Wednesday February 11th at Woodlawn Park North Mausoleum Chapel.
