GEORGE JAMES SHAMAS's Obituary
SHAMAS, George J., 90, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2014. Born in Altoona, PA, he was proud of his Lebanese heritage. While serving in the US Army during World War II, and stationed in Hattiesburg, Mississippi he met his wife Frances Kreed Napier. The couple moved to Miami and became life-long residents of Coral Gables. He attended the University of Miami, earning his law degree and practiced probate law for over 40 years. He donated his time and talent and served on the board of the Children’s Home Society where he assisted numerous couples in adopting their children. To his honor, he was the youngest member of the Director’s Staff of the Mahi Shriners and remained a life member. Important to him was the Boys Club of Miami on SW 32nd Avenue. With tireless efforts he was responsible for the construction of the gymnasium, which bears his name. He started the Christmas tree sale at the club, which to this day is an iconic fundraiser for the organization. Devoted to his family, he is survived by his wife of 66 years, Kreed, his son Mike (Mary), daughter Becky Guilford (Gregg), grandchildren Kevin Shamas, Emory Guilford and Grayson Guilford, and sister Patricia Myura (Buzz). He was honest in business, loyal to his friends, and dedicated to his family. He called life as he saw it, all the while enjoying a good cigar. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 21, 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Van Orsdel Funeral Coral Gables Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in the name of George J. Shamas made payable to Westminster Christian School, 6855 SW 152 Street, Palmetto Bay, FL 33157.
