George Mitch's Obituary
George Mitch was born on 3/22/1926 in the coal mining region of western PA. He came from a family of 16 brothers and sisters. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, then moved to Florida. In 1959 he met and married Roberta (Bobbi) at the beginning of his business career. He was a licensed Insurance Adjuster, advancing to Paint and Body Shop Manager of Abraham Chevrolet for 20 years, then owned his own auto salvage business. George owned property in Marathon where he enjoyed being on the water. George entered the Masonic Order in 1968, Nor-Mi Lodge, Miami Scottish Rite Bodies, and Mahi Shriners in December 1971. He served 30 continuous years to Mahi in an elected/appointed position. George held the position of Marshall of Units, Assistant Marshall and First and Second Ceremonial Masters. He was an active Road Runner with over 10,000 miles taking children to the Shriner’s Hospital in Tampa for evaluation and returning them to the Miami area. He accomplished and promoted the Paper and Plaque Drives in Marathon, Florida, which funded the Transportation fund. Perhaps his most beloved involvement was being a member of the team that organized the Anhinga Group. In 1993 George served as Chief, initiating more than 300 Shriners into the Degree. In 1995 – 1999 served as Treasurer for Mahi Shrine Center. He was elected to the Divan in 2000 and obtained the rank of Potentate in 2004. In recent years George remained active as a revered Past Potentate and remained especially active in the Marathon Shrine Club. George was predeceased by his wife Roberta Jean Mitch, is survived by his daughter Arlene Hanon, two grandchildren, Christopher and Roberta, great-grand child, Marcus, several brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, July 26, 2009 at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations in his name may be made to the Mahi Shriner’s Transportation Fund.
