George Mira's Obituary
George Mira, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and legendary football figure, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025, at the age of 83.
Born and raised in Key West, Florida, George rose to national prominence as a standout quarterback at the University of Miami, where he earned the nickname “The Matador.” Known for his poise, precision, and leadership, he became the Hurricanes’ first major star quarterback, setting numerous records and helping elevate the program to national recognition. His contributions to the sport were later honored with his induction into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.
George went on to enjoy a remarkable 13-year professional career across the NFL, CFL, and WFL. He played for the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Colts, and Miami Dolphins, as well as the Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts. In the World Football League, he achieved one of the highlights of his career, being named Most Valuable Player of the 1974–1975 championship game. Throughout his years on the field, George earned respect for his toughness, dedication, and deep understanding of the game.
Off the field, George lived life with the same passion and energy that defined his playing days. A scratch golfer, he participated in and helped support numerous celebrity golf charity tournaments, using his talents to give back to causes close to his heart.
After retiring from football, George turned his attention to family and entrepreneurship. He opened three locations of the family-run Pizza Huddle restaurant, which became beloved community gathering places. He later launched the Native Conch food truck, proudly sharing the flavors of his Key West heritage. His natural warmth and love of people made both ventures a success. His nieces and nephews especially adored him, always drawn to his humor, generosity, and larger-than-life presence.
George is survived by his sons, George Mira Jr. (and daughter-in-law Janet), Eric Mira (and daughter-in-law Justyna), and Jason Mira (and daughter-in-law Scarleth); his cherished grandchildren, Nick and Monica Mira, and Zaya, Avani, and Naja Mira; his brother, Joe Mira; and his sister, Rose Mira Thomas. He leaves behind a loving extended family, devoted friends, former teammates, and countless fans who continue to honor his legacy.
George Mira will be remembered not only as an extraordinary athlete, but as a devoted family man, a loyal friend, and a proud ambassador of his community. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched—on and off the field.
May he rest in peace.
