George C. D'Avignon's Obituary
Maj. (ret.) George C. d’Avignon, 79, of Key West Florida, passed away in the evening on Dec. 12, 2012 at Kindred Specialty Hospital in Coral Gables, Florida. Cremation has taken place and he will be buried at sea. A Memorial service will be held at a later date in Key West, Florida.
George was born in Hartford Connecticut and grew up in New Jersey. At 18 he entered the US Army and became a professional soldier, and later a Green Beret. He was devoted to his country and was wounded during his service in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, and Purple Heart. George was an adventurous person who loved to scuba dive. He was fearless and exposed his children to many adventures in his travels to Hawaii, Okinawa, California, Indiana, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Later in life he continued to dive and explore sunken ships, his last being the Santa Leocadia in Ecuador.
He is survived by his 3 children, Diana (Bob) Goodwin of Sidney, and Chris (Janie) d’Avignon and Theresa d’Avignon, all of San Diego, California; 4 Grandchildren, Ashley & Zachariah Goodwin, and Angella & Aleksander d’Avignon; his dear friends John and Pat Chamberlin; and a community of friends at the Boca Chica Marina. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be made to your local Volunteer Veterans Service Organization.
