GEORGE MATTESON DARNELL's Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Matteson Darnell of Coral Gables, Florida, on March 20, 2025, at the age of 89.
George had a wonderful life. Born with an abundance of passion and relentless drive, he set his sights high and worked tirelessly to achieve them. He was a man of unwavering integrity, known for his honesty, fairness, and directness. He approached life with a deep sense of compassion and loyalty, always standing by those he loved.
After graduating from Shattuck Military Academy and the University of Iowa, George began what would become his lifelong career with Baxter Healthcare, formerly American Hospital Supply Corp., Scientific Products Division. His dedication and work ethic propelled him through the ranks as he earned his MBA from the University of Miami. He served as president of the Dade Division for twenty years before being promoted to Executive Vice President of Baxter Healthcare Corporation. Throughout his career, he built a legacy of excellence, principled leadership, and unwavering commitment to those he worked with.
As a leader, George’s impact went far beyond business. He believed in people. No matter their level or position—whether in maintenance or the executive suite—he made it a point to remember names, personal details, and little things about each person he met. He understood that recognition and respect were fundamental, and he made sure everyone knew they mattered. His ability to connect with people on a personal level left a lasting impression on all who worked with him.
George had many interests that he pursued with the same intensity and dedication that defined his professional life. He was an accomplished sailor, a skilled pilot, an avid fisherman, a golfer, a skier, and a world traveler. His drive and determination to master his passions meant that his family was always along for the adventure, creating cherished memories together. Whether casting a line, hoisting a sail, or swinging a club, George lived each day with a sense of purpose and enthusiasm that was truly inspiring.
Nothing brought him more pride and joy than his family. Lucia Darnell, his wife, was the love of his life and his constant companion for 46 years. Together they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering love. He was a devoted father to Marcia Darnell, Dee Dee Darnell, and Tony Abernathy, and a cherished grandfather to Keegan Brown, Briana (Brown) Bohannon, Matteson Wein, Samantha Wein, Abby (Abernathy) Sevigny, Natalie (Abernathy) Johnston, and Grace Abernathy. His love extended to his great-grandchildren, Olivia Brown, Lenox Bohannon, and Blakely Bohannon.
To his friends and colleagues, George was a man of high integrity—dependable, fair, and always willing to lend a helping hand. His honesty and direct nature were matched by his deep sense of compassion. He was not just respected; he was deeply admired by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 29th, at 11:00 am at St. Philip’s Episcopal, a church he loved and was an active member of for 33 years.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in George’s name to St. Philip's Episcopal Church (for Social Outreach Endowment) or Tunnel To Towers Foundation.
Fly high, George. Your love, laughter, and steadfast spirit will live on forever in our hearts.
