Gary is a great man whom I will always admire, and never forget. In addition to his vast known accomplishments he was/is an “elegant and quiet mentor” to me and many others. He taught us many lessons - a huge one that he taught me is that I could indeed have a positive impact on others. I have cherished this lesson and am grateful to say that with his inspiration I have accomplished it at times. Perhaps the “Tale of the Starfish” is a good example:
THE TALE OF THE STARFISH, IT ALL STARTED WHEN…
A young girl was walking along a beach upon which thousands of starfish had been washed up during a terrible storm. When she came to each starfish, she would pick it up, and throw it back into the ocean. People watched her with amusement.
She had been doing this for some time when a man approached her and said, “Little girl, why are you doing this? Look at this beach! You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!”
The girl seemed crushed, suddenly deflated. But after a few moments, she bent down, picked up another starfish, and hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied,
“Well, I made a difference for that one!”
The old man looked at the girl inquisitively and thought about what she had done and said. Inspired, he joined the little girl in throwing starfish back into the sea. Soon others joined, and all the starfish were saved.
So thank you Gary!
I believe that it is true that often we suffer more than the one who has passed, as they now are at rest and on a journey believed to be better than the one here on earth. We will all pray for the Gregory family.
Perhaps this (my) true story will help:
I remember when my mother passed away. I received a Sympathy Card from a friend’s Mom. It was titled “Love and Memories Last Forever”. Inside she wrote how she believed that my Mother would want me to understand that she is no longer suffering from the difficulties of disease and that if she could speak to me she would ask me to have Peace and Acceptance in her passing, and that she is now at peace herself. Something struck me about her words and I kept the card.
A year or so later this same woman passed away. I then found out that she had been suffering from cancer, including while she wrote the card to me. I passed the card on to my friend, her son, and to me it was truly moving. It was if she was speaking to her son, giving him her thoughts about her passing.
I’m sure that if Gary could speak to you now he would tell you the same. I can also assure you that he has Peace. As a parent I want nothing more than to see my child thrive and be happy. Surely he is satisfied and I hope that you find comfort in this.
