Estelle C. Overstreet's Obituary
Overstreet, Estelle Caldwell “Mimi,” 102, died on Friday November 6th 2009 just 37 days after she celebrated her birthday with friends and family in the home she had lived in for more than 50 years. Seven-year-old Estelle came to Miami from Dalton, Georgia in 1914 with her mother, father and brother Russell. At first, they lived on Key Biscayne and she took the ferry to school in Coconut Grove. She graduated from Coconut Grove High School, now Coconut Grove Elementary, in 1925 the first and only class to complete four years of high school there. Seventeen days after she graduated she went to work for realtor Irving J. Thomas, the first mayor of Coconut Grove when it was a city. She worked for him for 37 years, retiring in July 1962. She married J.D. Overstreet on Easter Sunday morning 1930 at Plymouth Congregational Church where she remained an active member for the rest of her life. In 1974, she dedicated a statue above the main church door entitled “The Welcoming Christ” designed by Hubert Dumont in memory of her husband who died in 1965. They owned and operated Grove Cycle Shop on Fuller Street from the early 1950s to 1964. She had many friends and was a living Coconut Grove encyclopedia and human history book who loved to share her memories. Estelle was the loving mother of her late son Jimmy, late daughter Janet Frey and her late grandson Michael Frey. She is survived by daughter-in-law JoAnn Mobley Overstreet, niece Patricia Harrison (Ed), grandchildren Susan Overstreet (Nev Grove), Tom Overstreet (Lark), Marie Gaddy (David) and Marjorie Sullivan, seven great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren. The memorial service will be held 2:00 pm on Saturday November 21 at VAN ORSDEL CORAL GABLES. Friends are invited to gather at 1:30 prior to the service at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Plymouth Congregational Church 3400 Devon Road, Miami, Florida 33133.
