Obituary for ERMA JEAN SWINDOLL
Erma Jean Swindoll, 88, breathed her last breath at 6:20pm on March 27, 2019 in Miami, FL. She was born in Houston, TX, on December 10, 1930, to Erma Hughes and Alonzo Allison Hensley. She had one brother, Karl Virgil Hensley, 5 years her senior. She obtained a Bachelors Degree from Mary Hardin Baylor University and taught middle school English for a few years. In July of 1952 she met the love of her life, Orville Swindoll, at a church meeting through her college friend, Luci Swindoll, who happened to be his sister. Orville and Erma Jean were drawn to each other by their shared faith and devotion to serving Jesus Christ wherever he led them. They were married December 19, 1952.
In November of 1959 they moved to Resistencia, Chaco, in the northern part of Argentina where a spiritual revival was taking place. They went as missionaries with the goal of teaching biblical truths to a rapidly growing number of believers. In the 31 years they lived in Argentina they ministered not only in Resistencia, Chaco, but also in Santa Fe, Buenos Aires and other cities, and frequently made trips to minister in other Spanish speaking countries as well. They moved back to the USA in 1991 where they continued reaching out in ministry to Spanish speakers in Miami, Florida and in other countries.
Erma Jean was known for her gentle spirit, her kindness, her willingness to listen, her strong desire to help others, her bold faith, and her humility. She was devoted to her husband and children, and she welcomed countless others into her home, both as surprise guests as well as long-term staying ones. She faced many different challenges in her life, but her faith, courage and adaptability served her well to get through every one of them, blessing those around her in the process.
Erma Jean is survived by her husband of 66 years, Orville Earl Swindoll; three daughters and one son, Erma Lovell, Julia Jean, Gloria Ann, and David Earl; nineteen grandchildren, Carolina, Julieta, Cecilia, Ana, Desiree, Michelle, Jessica, Andrew, Johanna, Valerie, Melody, Bryan, Alan, Mark, Jeffrey, Spencer, Grace, James, and William; and 15 great-grandchildren, Sophia, Christian, Camila, Nathan, Ana, Leah, Jesse, Valerie, Amanda, Emilie, Keanu, Sienna, Enzo, Noam, and Nico; furthermore, two great-granddaughters are due this year.
There will be a viewing and memorial service on Tuesday April 2, from 7pm to 9pm at Van Orsdel Funeral Home, 11220 N. Kendall Dr., Miami. On Wednesday, April 3 the burial will take place at Caballero Rivero Dade South Cemetery, 14200 SW 117 Ave., Miami, FL. Cars will leave in a procession from the funeral home at 10:30 am.

Erma Jean Swindoll, de 88 años de edad, falleció a las 6:20pm el día 27 de marzo de 2019 en Miami, FL. Nació en Houston, TX el 10 de diciembre de 1930. Sus padres fueron Erma Hughes y Alonzo Allison Hensley. Tuvo un hermano, Karl Virgil Hensley, que le llevaba 5 años. Obtuvo un título de Licenciada en inglés de la universidad de Mary Hardin Baylor y ensenó en escuelas públicas por unos años. En julio de 1952 conoció al amor de su vida, Orville Swindoll, en una reunión de la iglesia donde asistía su amiga de la universidad, Luci Swindoll, que además era hermana de Orville. Orville y Erma Jean sintieron una atracción mutua por la fe que compartían y por la devoción al servicio de Jesucristo que ambos profesaban. Contrajeron nupcias el 19 de diciembre de 1952.
En noviembre de 1959 se mudaron a Resistencia, Chaco, en el norte argentino donde se estaba viviendo una renovación espiritual. Fueron como misioneros con el objetivo de enseñar verdades bíblicas a las multitudes que estaban convirtiéndose a Cristo. En los 31 años vividos en Argentina ministraron no sólo en Resistencia, Chaco, sino también en Santa Fe y en Buenos Aires, además de realizar varios viajes para ministrar en otros países de habla hispana. Regresaron a los Estados Unidos en 1991 donde continuaron sirviendo y ministrando a hispanoparlantes en Miami, Florida y en otros países.
A Erma Jean se la conocía por su espíritu apacible, su bondad, su disposición de escuchar a otros, su deseo fuerte de brindar ayuda al prójimo, su fe audaz y su humildad. Mostró devoción a su marido e hijos, y recibió en su hogar a cantidades de personas, tanto los que venían de sorpresa, como las visitas programadas. Enfrentó muchos y variados desafíos a lo largo de su vida, pero su fe, su valentía y su capacidad de adaptación le permitieron sobrellevarlos y, a la vez, bendecir a muchos más.
A Erma Jean le sobreviven su esposo, Orville Earl Swindoll; tres hijas y un hijo, Erma Lovell, Julia Jean, Gloria Ann y David Earl; diecinueve nietos, Carolina, Julieta, Cecilia, Ana, Desiree, Michelle, Jessica, Andrew, Johanna, Valerie, Melody, Bryan, Alan, Mark, Jeffrey, Spencer, Grace, James y William; y 15 bisnietos, Sophia, Christian, Camila, Nathan, Ana, Leah, Jesse, Valerie, Amanda, Emilie, Keanu, Sienna, Enzo, Noam y Nico; a los que se añadirán dos bisnietas que nacerán durante el año en curso.
Tendremos el velorio y un servicio conmemorativo el martes 2 de abril, a partir de las 7pm en la funeraria Van Orsdel, 11220 N. Kendall Dr., Miami. El miércoles 3 de abril se llevará a cabo el entierro en el Cementerio Caballero Rivero Dade South, 14200 SW 117 Ave., Miami, FL. Los autos saldrán en procesión desde la funeraria a las 10am.
