EMILY S STEARNS's Obituary
STEARNS, Emily S. of Key Biscayne, Florida, passed away on Sunday evening, December 14, 2014 at her home at the age of 96. Her husband of 73 years, Stanley D. Stearns, passed away near his 97th birthday in July of 2013. She is survived by her four children; Stanley D. Stearns, Jr. (Judy) of Gig Harbor, Washington, and Houston, Texas, Eugene E. Stearns (Diana) of Key Biscayne, Frank A. Stearns (Gerda) of Superior, Wisconsin, and Kenneth W. Stearns of Houston; her six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was born to Frank Young Speight and Julia Ernest Speight in Thomasville, Georgia on November 13, 1918. She was the youngest of three children. Her brothers were the late Frank Speight and the late Eugene Speight. After graduating from what was then known as the Georgia State College for Women in 1938, she taught high school French in Georgia. On a trip to visit an aunt living in Miami in 1940 she met and then married her husband at First Baptist Church in Thomasville. After she and Stan were married, they moved to Miami Beach. She raised and educated their four sons and taught piano in their home. Emily loved to sew and crochet throughout much of her life. For many years she gave her time and sewed countless shirts and gowns to comfort sick children in the local hospital. She was also well read in the classics and a skilled pianist who taught all of her children a love of music and literature. Almost to the end of her life she hardly missed a day playing the piano. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and will be missed greatly. Her family celebrated her life by singing music together at her memorial service held January 3, 2015 at Terrace Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.
