ELIZABETH S. WHITE's Obituary
Elizabeth White of East Ridge Retirement Village passed away April 16th. Born in Brooklyn, Michigan, she received a B.A. Degree from Alma College, Alma, Michigan and a M.A. Degree from the University of Michigan. Liz, as she was known, served the Dade County Public Schools as a classroom teacher at Miami Beach Senior High School (formerly Ida M. Fisher), Miami Jackson Senior High School and as the first Dade County Supervisor of English. She retired in 1973 as Director of Secondary Schools, Southwest Area. She was active in various local, state and national educational organizations, some of which were the Dade County Teachers of English, President of the Florida Council of Teachers of English, and as a speaker at conventions on the three levels. Her name appears on English textbooks published by Harcourt, Brace and Janovich as author, co-author and critic collaborator.
Liz’s teaching career was interrupted by WWII when she was selected as a member of the WAAC Second Officer Candidate Class. On active duty, she was the Senior WAAC officer in assignments on local, state and district levels. After leaving active duty to later resume teaching, she remained a member of the United States Army Reserve. In her assignments in the Miami USAR School, she was Director of the Adjutant General Department and, at several summer camps involving officers from the southeastern states, was responsible for instruction. She retired a Lt. Colonel.
Liz’s community commitments were many: President of Epsilon chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma; President of the Florida Council of Teachers of English; Charter Member of the South Dade County Retired Officers Association at the University of Miami, membership in the Women’s Guild, the Golden Canes, the Heritage Society and the Bowman Ashe Society of Founders, the Alma College Heritage Society and Honorary Life Member of the Florida Chapter.
Liz was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Philip (Peter) White and her sister, Gertrude Winkel. She is survived by two nieces and two nephews and their families.
In lieu of flowers a donation to the Food Pantry of St. Faith’s Episcopal Church is suggested.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 25th in St. Faith’s Episcopal Church, 10600 Caribbean Blvd., Cutler Bay, FL 33189
