Dr. Agustin Torre's Obituary
Dr. Agustin Torre, 81, of Miami passed away April 14, 2020 due complications from a stroke.
Agustin was born in Havana Cuba, August 14, 1938. He completed his elementary and high school in Escuelas Pias, a Catholic boy’s school where he met many of his lifelong friends. He received his medical Degree from the University of Salamanca Spain in 1964 after having proudly immigrated to America that same year. Agustin repaid this countries kindness by enlisting in the US Army 1969. After several advancements in rank, Agustin was honorably discharged at the rank of Major in 1971. Agustin remained in private practice in New Jersey and later in Coral Gables until he retired. He was proud to be the first Cuban doctor with admitting privileges at Baptist Hospital in Miami.
Agustin’s great passion was his family. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Lilliam. His devotion to her was an example to all who knew him. She was the joy in his life. His generosity with his children was boundless. He was proud of funding college education and post graduate degrees to all his children. He found joy and pride in giving as he also funded college for all 9 of his grandchildren.
Agustin had a passion for learning that lasted throughout his life. He strived to be the master of his craft while serving his patients with personalized one on one care. He took pride in running a practice where patients could be seen at the time they made appointments. Delia Portela, his sister-in-law and office manager, was a large part of his success. Their partnership was a source of peace for him that transcended the bonds of work and family.
Lastly, Agustin had a passion for his friends. The bonds created with his friends as they sought refuge from communism had a permanent effect on him. The little they had, they shared. He was the recipient of a thousand acts of kindness and provider of a thousand as well. He was fortunate to have maintained lifelong friends. They shared laughter and tears, loved each other deeply, and supported each without limitation.
His community service included working with the indigent at the clinic of San Juan Bosco in little Havana. He was lifetime member of the Catholic Action where he made his lifelong friends.
He is survived by his children Lily Tobar (Robert), Jacqueline Torre, Henry Torre and Carlos Torre (Amy), and nine grandchildren Christina, Robert, Austin, Christopher, Allison Carlos, Emily, Grace and Enrique.
