Dorothy Rosemerry Nelson's Obituary
Dorothy Rosemerry Nelson, nee Lewis, was born on September 5 th , 1938, in the parish of St. Thomas in
Jamaica to the late Jemima Williams and Laurence Lewis. She attended Sunny Hill Primary school and
later transferred to Morant Bay Primary from which she graduated. Dorothy was then apprenticed to
learn dressmaking and became very good at crocheting and embroidery. She turned these skills into a
small business, taking orders for Christmas, birthdays and other special occasions.
She later moved to the capital Kingston, where in 1957 she gave birth to her first child, Calvin. Dorothy
married Herbert Nelson in 1975, who passed away in 1994. That union produced two children, Patrick
and Donna. Donna also preceded her in death in 2008.
In 1985 Dorothy migrated to New York where she worked in the Child Care field and later transitioned to
the hotel industry from where she retired around 2001 due to a medical condition. She relocated to
Florida in 2005 and became a member of the Emmanuel Apostolic Church of Perrine, and in 2008 she
joined The Bethel Church of Maimi under the leadership of Apostle Carlos Malone. At The Bethel Church
she became a member of the Ambassadors of War Prayer Ministry. She was also an active member of
the …… senior center she attended where she developed some life-long friendships.
Dorothy loved the Lord and loved to worship and pray. She was dedicated to her children and loved her
family. She enjoyed family gatherings and one of her greatest joys was spending time with her grand
and great-grandchildren. Dorothy will be remembered as a fun loving, caring, and compassionate
woman of God, who always had a word of encouragement and wisdom for anyone in need. She was
loved and appreciated by everyone.
Dorothy is survived by her two sons; Calvin Brown and Patrick Nelson: daughter-in-law; Beverly Brown:
grandchildren; Thabiti Brown, Tajia Anglin, Aaron Clarke, Cadine O’Connor, Nadine Vargas, Anastasia
Burton, Randy Nelson and Adria Nelson: great grandchildren; Zurae O’Connor, Gavin O’Connor, Dainyah
