DORIS E. WILCOX LINDSEY's Obituary
Doris Evelyn Wilcox Lindsey (Auntie Dodo), aged 93, died peacefully on November 7, 2017. Doris was born September 16, 1924, in Bisbee, Arizona on a ranch, the daughter of Bernice May and Harry William Wilcox. Doris grew up on an Arizona ranch and rode horses with her beloved seven siblings. She was a cowgirl! She went to Tombstone High School and often told us that if she missed the school bus, she would have to walk five miles to school. She had great stories of her ranch life which she shared over the years. Doris loved her country, and loved to help others. She served as Yeoman First Class in the United States Naval Reserve (Women's Reserve), better known as the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), the World War II women's branch of the United States Naval Reserve. She also volunteered to prepare care bags of clothing for homeless veterans, and served on an Emergency Response team, donning a hard helmet and backpack to alert others in her neighborhood of impending emergencies. In 1952, Doris married the love of her life, John Lindsey. They moved to Miami, Florida, where Doris worked with John, an attorney, as his secretary and office assistant for more than 30 years, and raised their three children. Doris loved her family and friends and adored her five grandchildren. Doris was preceded in death by her husband John and son Richard. She is survived by her son Warren Lindsey and his wife Eileen of Winter Park, FL; her daughter Carol Lindsey of Winter Park, FL; her five grandchildren Scott and his wife Ashley, Megan, Lindsey, Katie, and John; Lindsey and Katie’s father Michael Sastre; and a number of beloved nieces, nephews, relatives and friends in Arizona, California, and Florida. Doris will be remembered for her kindness, beautiful smile, and feisty personality. There will be a vigil at Van Orsdel Coral Gables Chapel on November 29, 2017, from 6 to 8 pm, and a funeral mass at the Church of the Little Flower in Coral Gables on November 30 at 11 am, immediately followed by a graveside service at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent in her name to The Salvation Army.
