Dora Rodriguez's Obituary
Rodríguez, Dora (Garcia del Río), 91, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. Dora was born in Florida, Camagüey, Cuba on July 24, 1930 to Fernando Garcia del Río and Rosa Gutierrez.
Dora attended and obtained her baccalaureate from El Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza de Ciego de Ávila. She loved to read and was very studious. She loved going to book stores and always had a new book in her hand. She and her sisters grew up spending their summers at the beach in Varadero. Dora played the piano from a young age (as did several of her grandchildren whom followed in her footsteps - she was very proud of this) and enjoyed listening to various pianists and composers, particularly Ernesto Lecuona. She attended El Instituto Musical Amparo Rizo in Camagüey and earned several honors and accolades for playing the piano.
She met the love of her life, Pedro Ronaldo “Ronald” Rodriguez in primary school. They were friends for years before falling in love and dating for 8 years. They were married on July 30, 1958, celebrating 63 years of marriage on their last anniversary. They had two children, Ileana “Ily” and Pedro Ronaldo “Ronnie” Rodriguez, whom she adored and dedicated her life to taking care of.
In 1969, Dora and Ronald bravely left Cuba for the United States with nothing but $5 to their names, to provide a better life for their children. Here she was reunited with her sisters, who had come to the United States before her.
Dora was a very devout Catholic. She taught her children and grandchildren to always put the Lord first, to be kind, and to love thy neighbor. She was very active in the St. Brendan Catholic Church parish and was a lead member of the The Sacred Heart Ministry. She was very devout to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Food was a big part of Dora’s life. She loved to cook and bake, especially for others. She loved to see her family smiling as they enjoyed her cooking. Family was the most important part of her life, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren more than anything in the world. Seeing everyone together around the dining room table was what made her the happiest.
Dora is predeceased by her parents, Fernando Garcia del Rio and Rosa Gutierrez; her sister, Argelia Gatell; and her nieces, Ana María Guitian and Ivette Estefani. She is survived by the love of her life, Pedro Ronaldo Rodriguez; her children, Ileana Boyles (Michael), and Ronnie Rodriguez (Schonda); grandchildren, Lizzy Boyles, Sean Boyles, Becky Rodriguez, Joey Rodriguez, and Nico Rodriguez; her sister, Sara Gatell; niece Ivonne Gatell-Suarez and nephew Victor Manuel Gatell Jr.; as well as many cousins, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews and friends.
She touched so many lives with her kindness and gentleness throughout her 91 years on this earth. Her family feels beyond blessed to have been able to share this life with her. She will be greatly missed by many. May God Bless Dora Rodriguez and may she be in His glory.

Dora atendió y obtuvo su bachillerato en El Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza de Ciego de Ávila. Le encantaba leer y era muy estudiosa. Le encantaba ir a las librerías y siempre tenía un libro nuevo en la mano. Ella y sus hermanas crecieron pasando los veranos en la playa de Varadero. Dora tocaba el piano desde muy joven (igual que varios de sus nietos que siguieron sus pasos, estaba muy orgullosa de ellos) y disfrutaba escuchando a varios pianistas y compositores, en particular a Ernesto Lecuona. Atendió al Instituto Musical Amparo Rizo en Camagüey y obtuvo varios honores y reconocimientos por tocar el piano.
Conoció el amor de su vida, Pedro Ronaldo “Ronald” Rodríguez en la escuela primaria. Fueron amigos durante años antes de enamorarse y ser novios durante 8 años. Se casaron el 30 de julio de 1958, celebrando 63 años de matrimonio en su último aniversario. Tuvieron dos hijos, Ileana “Ily” y Pedro Ronaldo “Ronnie” Rodríguez, a quienes adoraba y dedicó su vida.
En 1969, Dora y Ronald valientemente se fueron de Cuba a los Estados Unidos con nada más que $5, para brindar una mejor vida a sus hijos. Aquí se reunió con sus hermanas, que habían venido a los Estados Unidos antes que ella.
Dora era una Católica muy devota. Enseñó a sus hijos y nietos a poner siempre al Señor primero, ser amables y amar al prójimo. Fue muy activa en la parroquia de la Iglesia Católica St. Brendan y fue miembro principal del Ministerio del Sagrado Corazón. Era muy devota del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús.
La comida era una gran parte en la vida de Dora. Le encantaba cocinar y hacer postres (el mejor flan y panetela borracha!), especialmente para los demás. Le encantaba ver a su familia sonriendo mientras disfrutaban de su cocina. La familia era la parte más importante de su vida, mas que nada le encantaba pasar tiempo con sus hijos y nietos. Ver a todos juntos alrededor de la mesa del comedor era lo que la hacía más feliz.
Dora es antecedida en muerte por sus padres, Fernando García del Río y Rosa Gutiérrez; su hermana, Argelia Gatell; y sus sobrinas, Ana María Guitian y Ivette Estefani. Le sobreviven el amor de su vida, Pedro Ronaldo Rodríguez; sus hijos, Ileana Boyles (Michael) y Ronnie Rodríguez (Schonda); nietos, Lizzy Boyles, Sean Boyles, Becky Rodriguez, Joey Rodriguez y Nico Rodriguez; su hermana, Sara Gatell; sobrina Ivonne Gatell-Suarez y sobrino Victor Manuel Gatell Jr.; así como muchos primos, bis-sobrinos y amistades.
Ella tocó muchas vidas con su amabilidad y dulzura durante sus 91 años en esta tierra. Su familia se siente bendecida por haber podido compartir esta vida con ella. Muchos la extrañarán mucho. Que Dios Bendiga a Dora Rodríguez y que ella esté en Su gloria.
