Donald Elwood Lape's Obituary
Donald E. Lape, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.
The youngest of five children, Don was born to Levi and Margaret Lape and grew up in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, alongside his siblings Bob, Leone, Jim, and Althea. A gifted student,
Don graduated high school at the age of 16. He was also passionate about sports, excelling in
athletics as an avid bowler who once bowled a perfect 300 game and as a baseball player in a
local city league.
During the Korean War, Don served in the U.S. Army, where he was granted high security
clearance after a background check. He was stationed at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, where he
worked in the Military Police and guarded “Project 76,” a top-secret underground facility used to
store nuclear bombs. After his service, Don took advantage of the G.I. Bill and earned his degree
in Education from the University of Pittsburgh.
In 1962, after marrying Barbara Bertollini, Don moved to Miami, where they would spend the
rest of their lives. He became a teacher and later earned his master's degree from the University
of Miami. Don was promoted to Elementary School Principal, a role he held until his retirement.
Together, Don and Barbara raised three children—Eric, Rebecca, and Doug—and were blessed
with five grandchildren—Chelsey, Sara Beth, Banna, Connor, and Ryan—and two great-
grandchildren, Layne and Levi.
Don was an active member of both Methodist and Presbyterian churches in Miami. He was
known for his love of singing and was a member of the Miami Barbershop Choir, performing in
local concerts and traveling to other cities for regional competitions. In his later years, Don
joined the International Singers at Century Village. His passion for music was a constant joy in
his life.
A sports enthusiast, Don enjoyed playing golf and attending every University of Miami football
game. He was also a loyal supporter of new sports franchises in the city, purchasing season
tickets for their inaugural seasons, including the Marlins and the Heat.
Don was known for his charm, humor, and genuine warmth. He had a way of making everyone
feel special and was loved by his family, friends, and students alike. His kindness, humor, and
positive spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Above all, Don was devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He
will be remembered for his loving nature, strength, and ability to brighten any room. Don (Pap
Pap) will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
