DOLORES M CASTRO's Obituary
Dolores M. Castro, age 100, of Miami, Florida passed away July 25, 2021, of respiratory complications.
Known to most as Lola or Lolita.
She was born in Pueblo Nuevo in the city of Matanzas, Cuba on December 14, 1920. Lola graduated in
1942 from the Escuela Normal de Matanzas with a degree of “Maestro Normal”. This is the equivalent of
a 4-year college degree in education today.
After graduation Lola traveled daily from her hometown to nearby Sumidero in Matanzas. There she was
the school principal and taught elementary age children for several years. Later she transferred to the
city of Matanzas where she taught Grammar and Composition (“Lenguaje”) to adults in night school.
In 1946 she married Jose M. Castro and had two children: Jose Miguel (“Pepe”) and Blanca Elena
(“Blanqui”). Lola became a young widow in 1951 when her husband was involved in a fatal automobile
accident.
In 1962 she left Cuba and came to Miami with her two children. There she worked in the garment
industry until her retirement in 1982. Over the years she participated socially in several senior centers
throughout Miami. Her leisure time was spent with her hobbies of sewing, knitting and painting.
During the last three years of her life, she lived at Residential Plaza at Blue Lagoon, an assisted living
facility in Miami where she was able to receive the special care and assistance she needed.
She is survived by her son Jose M. Castro of Miami, Florida.
