David Hume's Obituary
HUME, DAVID, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2009. Born to Helen Crandall Hume and Alfred Shepard Hume on November 3, 1921 in Ft. Valley, GA, David moved to Miami and graduated with honors from Miami High. He received a full scholarship to Yale University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 3 years. He served as President of the Yale Club of Miami and as Chairman of the Yale Scholarship Committee. During WWII, David served as a Major in the Air Force. David married his beloved Betty Ford in 1948; they were married for 41 years until her death in 1989. An advertising executive throughout his career, David was President of August Door Assoc. which became Hume Smith Mickelberry in 1958, and later Hume Sindelar & Assoc. He served as Marketing Director of the National Advertising Agency Network, Vice President of the American Marketing Association Miami Chapter, and secretary of the Greater Miami Association of Advertising Agencies. David was a community leader. He was a board member of the local YMCA, United Fund, Kiwanis and Junior Achievement. He served as a court-appointed guardian ad litem, providing support to children dealing with difficult home lives. He ran for School Board in 1952. David served as the first layman President of the Greater Miami Council of Churches. He was a Deacon at Plymouth Congregational Church and later at University Baptist Church. He and Betty taught Sunday school for many years. David loved helping others. His faith gave him a solid basis for his life and was his source of inner security and strength. An avid fisherman, David enjoyed stalking bonefish on the flats in Key Biscayne and snook around the island of Sanibel. In 1999, David moved to Epworth Village in Hialeah and then to the Susanna Wesley Nursing Facility. He is survived by his brother, Alfred; his son, David; daughters Cathy McKenzie and Holly Leggett; and his six grandchildren David, Ashley, Kelley, Brannon, Lauren and Lindsay. A memorial service will be held at the Chapel of University Baptist Church at 11:00 am on August 15th. There will be a private family gathering in April to celebrate his life.
