Daniel William Long's Obituary
MIAMI, FL – Daniel William Long, age 93, born October 30, 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio, passed away on February 14, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Charles Long, his sister Katherine, his brother Charles and his beloved wife and valentine, Alberta. While working on his undergraduate degree at The University of Notre Dame, Dan entered the US Navy through the Naval ROTC officers training program and subsequently served as an Ensign in 1945 aboard both the USS Cabot CVL 28 and the USS Vella Gulf CVB111, seeing action in the Pacific Arena. He earned the Victory Ribbon World War II and the American Theater Ribbon Asiatic-Pacific. After being honorably discharged in 1946, Dan returned to Notre Dame, completed his undergraduate degree and then earned his Law Degree. In 1950, Dan passed the Ohio bar, joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent and married his sweetheart Alberta. Dan’s first assignment in the FBI was the Boston Office, where he worked the famous “Brinks Robbery.” In 1951, Dan transferred from Boston to the New York City Office, where he worked on the Fugitive Squad, setting a Bureau record for making the most arrests in one year. Another famous case that Dan worked on while in New York City was the “Weinberger Kidnapping.” Dan spent most of his FBI career in the Bank Robbery Squad along with his best friend and partner, Special Agent Edward Putz. Dan retired from the FBI out of the Miami (FL) Office in 1979. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by three sons, Kevin (Candyce, wife) of Miami, Florida Timothy (Regina, wife) of Lakeland, Florida, Jonathan of Palmetto Bay, Florida three grandchildren, Daniel Long (Diane, wife) of Hollywood, Florida, Patrick and Thomas Long of Lakeland, Florida and great grandchildren Ryan & Imogen of Hollywood, Florida. Dan was a giving and kind man who spent his life thinking of others. He loved his family, greatly enjoyed cruises and Cleveland sports, never giving up on his favorite team the Cleveland Browns!
