Charles William Kilpatrick's Obituary

Charles William (Bill) 89, passed away March 9, 2011 after a long illness. Margarita his beloved wife of forty-two years was by his side. Bill was born in Durham, NC to Leo P. and Ela Orr Kilpatrick. After graduating from Georgia Tech in 1942, he received his Master’s in City Planning from American University. He was a WWII combat veteran in the US Navy on the Battle Cruiser USS Alaska and the heavy cruiser USS Salt Lake City. In 1946, after an honorable discharge as a Lieutenant, Bill’s avid interest in naval history inspired him to write the insightful book: Night Battles of the Solomon Islands. Bill was active in many organizations including the Navy League and the Coral Gables Country Club. His sense of humor and story-telling abilities brought smiles to many faces! He was loved and appreciated by many for his gentle manner and wonderful sense of humor. He will be dearly missed. Bill is survived by his wife Margarita C. Kilpatrick, and by daughters Dorothy Lane Murrah, Ann Maureen Walker, Leigh Paricia Mansell and Laurel Gwen Murrah from his first wife, Dorothy Ann Griffin Kilpatrick (deceased), and by sisters Mary Frances Furman and Betty June Anderson. He is also survived by six grandsons, two great grandsons, several nieces, nephews and cousins including pediatrician Dr. Gerry Kilpatrick and missionary John Kilpatrick. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory may be sent to the Catholic Hospice or to the Alzheimer’s Association. Visitation is from 5 pm to 9 pm, Sunday, March 13th. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 am on Monday all at VAN ORSDEL CORAL GABLES CHAPEL, 4600 SW 8ST. followed by Military Honors at Flagler Memorial Park, 5301 West Flagler St.
