Charles O. Morgan Sr.'s Obituary
MORGAN, Charles O., Sr., went to be with the Lord on July 30, 2010, just four days after his 97th birthday. Charles was born in Murphysboro, Ill, a descendant of President Grover Cleveland, and a distant cousin of Francis Scott Key. He graduated from Plant High School in Tampa, and went to University of Florida where he pole vaulted on the track team, was member of ATO and Bridge Club. He then served as 2d Lt with US Army.
In 1936 Charles and mother Eunice founded Morgan Piano Company in Mayfair Theater building at Biscayne Boulevard at 16th Street, now the Omni building. There he met Corabel, whom he later married, who was taking opera voice lessons on the second floor. Their marriage in 1937 lasted for 74 blessed years.
Charles was involved in many civic and Christian organizations. He was a founding director of Industrial National Bank with Leonard Abess, now City National Bank. He was a founding director of Goodwill Industries of Miami and a director of Downtown Kiwanis Club, National Association of Music Merchants, Florida Orchid Society, Civic Music Assn, and Lighthouse for the Blind. He was an elder at Miami Beach Presbyterian Church and Key Biscayne Presbyterian Church. He was a founding director of Christian Youth Ranch, Miami Bible College, later became Miami Christian University, South Florida Jail Ministry, and others.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife Corabel, sons Charles Jr and Raymond, 4 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30pm on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at Van Orsdel - Coral Gables. The Homegoing Celebration will be held at Granada Presbyterian Church, on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, at 10:00am, followed by a reception at the church.
