Charles Jackson Baldwin's Obituary
BALDWIN, Charles Jackson (Jack), 90, passed away on June 23, 2012. Native son of Miami, Florida, raised in Coral Gables. As a young child, he was the University of Miami’s first football mascot leading the 1925, 26 teams on the field before the games. He attended Ponce de Leon High School and later was renamed Coral Gables High School. Before World War II Jack attended Riverside Military Academy two years for his Army and OTC certification and graduated from the University of Florida where he was in the ATO Fraternity. Jack served valiantly in the Army’s 176 Infantry Regiment as a 2nd Lt. during WWII. He was wounded leading his men in battle in Germany in 1944. Afterwards, he spent 9 months in an English Hospital recovering and later received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He returned home and went into the family business of Baldwin Insurance Agency and Baldwin Mortgage Company founded by his father. He later was President of those companies as well as Baldwin Caldwell Mortgage Company. Active in many community and business organizations he was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, active member and past President of the Rotary Club of Miami, past President of the Orange Bowl Committee of which, as president he hosted the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy in the 1963 Orange Bowl game. He was past President of Young Presidents Organization and past President of the Chief Executives Forum and was past President of the Miami Club in downtown. Jack was a founding member of Riviera Country Club and of Coral Reef Yacht Club. He was past President of the Country Club of Miami and member of the Palm Bay Club. He regularly attended the First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables. Among many interest in his life was his deep love of his family, his love of fishing and boating and his weekend house in the keys. He was a very low handicap, avid golfer and rode horses like a true cowboy. He also loved spending summers every year in Hendersonville, NC. Jack really loved football. He loved the Orange Bowl Stadium and especially the Orange Bowl games and the University of Miami Hurricanes games. He was a season ticket holder also for the Miami Dolphins. Survived by his loving children, Susi, Bethany, and granddaughter, Jacqueline Coleman, step-children, Irene (Terry) Richards, Robert (Sally) Gravely, and step-grandchildren Robert, Clayton, and Paige. He had been predeceased by loving first wife, Sue, loving son, Jackson and beloved second wife, Irene. Visitation 5-7 PM Thursday June 28th at VAN ORSDEL CORAL GABLES. Service 3 PM Friday June 29th at First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables, 536 Coral Way. Burial will be private. Family suggests contributions to the Wounded Warriors Project or the United States Organization (USO).
