CAROLYN BARDEN HAWKINS's Obituary
Carolyn Hawkins, age 89, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2013, at the Palace Gardens in Homestead, Florida. She is survived by her three children, Larry Hawkins of Miami, a former Florida State Representative and Miami-Dade County Commissioner, Peggy Hawkins and her husband Ken Emigholz, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, and Mary Carolyn Davis and her husband Ted of Miami, and two surviving sisters Marcia Elizabeth Lind of Ocala, Florida and Frances Segura of Big Rapids, Michigan. Carolyn was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, W. Roy Hawkins, in 2004. They were the proud grandparents of Lawrence Richard (Ric) Hawkins II (deceased), Bryn Mary Hemsley Masiuk (Nick) and Michael Hawkins Davis (Jennifer) and great grandparents of Samantha Hawkins, Alex Hawkins, Gabriella Masiuk, Maegan Davis, Nicholas Timothy Masiuk, Jr., Claire Davis, and Madeline Masiuk. Carolyn and Roy had many nieces and nephews and a large extended family.
Carolyn was born Mary Carolyn Barden in Toledo, Ohio on June 17, 1923, and was one of 7 children. She graduated Valedictorian of Northwestern High School in Detroit, Michigan and received her Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Master’s Degree in Social Sciences from the University of Michigan. Carolyn was active in civic affairs and was the cofounder of Parent Cooperative Preschools International. She was President of the State of Michigan Cooperative Nursery Schools and she helped launch numerous cooperative preschools in Michigan and Florida. She lobbied to have the State of Michigan’s constitution revised, and helped to found the Miami Community Health Institute (CHI). Carolyn was a woman of many accomplishments and was recognized by countless organizations for her many contributions and leadership. Carolyn traveled the world with her husband and family. She circled the globe twice and visited over 40 countries.
She was loved deeply by her family and many friends; she was respected by all and will be missed.
The family will receive friends on June 8, 2013 at 1:00 PM, at the Funeral Home. A service of remembrance will be held immediately following at 2:00 PM.
