BARRIE DALE LINLEY C.B.E.'s Obituary
Barrie D. Linley, CBE
September 13, 1935 – July 5, 2017
Barrie Dale Linley was born in Manchester, England in 1935. He received a B.Sc. from the University of Manchester Institute of Technology and became a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE). After being commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force, Barrie worked for ICI where he met his wife Brenda, and they had two daughters. He attended IMEDE, an international business school in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1974, where he and Brenda made life-long friends from around the globe.
In 1978, he emigrated from the north east of England to Miami where the family settled and Barrie established Britannic International Corp., a chemical and raw material trading company. Barrie was a founding member and past president of the British American Business Council and the British American Chamber of Commerce. In 1995, Her Majesty The Queen bestowed him with the distinguished honour of Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to British commercial interests in the United States.
Always active in sports, and an avid car enthusiast, Barrie was most at home on the water, sailing – an interest he shared passionately with his father and passed on to his daughter Joanne. He and Brenda traveled the world for work and pleasure, but always returned home to Coral Gables.
So often referred to as a gentleman, Barrie will always be remembered as a well respected man of great integrity and humility, a loyal quiet man with a sharp humor and tremendous spirit who rose to every challenge. He was a wonderful role model who will be missed by many.
Barrie Linley died peacefully on July 5, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Brenda, his sister Jennifer Tobert, his two daughters Joanne and Fiona (Alvarez), his son-in-law JC Alvarez, and his grandsons Christian and Jared Alvarez.
The family will receive friends at a memorial reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Van Orsdel Coral Gables Chapel, 4600 S.W. 8th Street, Miami, FL 33134.
