Banning Gray Lary's Obituary
Lary, Dr. Banning “Brud” Gray, (88) passed away peacefully at his home in South Miami at 4:30 pm on Thursday, January 3, 2013. Born in Winchester, Kentucky in 1924, the younger son of Virgil Pendleton and Thelma Gray Lary, Brud is survived by his wife Katherine Tedrow Lary, his three sons Banning Kent, Scott Tedrow and Todd Pendleton Lary, their wives Valerie, Elizabeth and Diane, his grandchildren Venus, Elizabeth, Nina, Alexandra, Kristin, Curtis and Brittney, and great grandchildren Olivia, Juliette, Kaya and Emily. He was predeceased by his youngest son, Brett in 1981.
During his distinguished career, Dr. Lary treated tens of thousands of patients, held key leadership positions at many Miami area hospitals as well as many volunteer community positions as leader and teacher. His research resulted in many published papers and over 30 U. S. patents, many for medical inventions being used every day in hospitals worldwide.
Brud Lary’s forebears arrived from Scotland and Ireland in the 1600s, and settled Kentucky after the Revolutionary War near Paris. His grandfather, John Curtis, was known as the Renaissance man of Bourbon County. Raised in Tulsa, Lary became the Oklahoma State diving champion and won a scholarship to the University of Michigan. He served with the Third Armored Division of the United States Army and was sent to Fort Custer for training in the M4 Sherman Tank. His brother, Virgil Pendleton Lary, Jr., was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge in the infamous Malmedy Massacre on December 17, 1944, and awarded the Bronze Star for bravery. When the War ended, Brud continued his studies under the G.I. Bill. Lary interned at St Luke's Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, and became increasingly dedicated to independent research on the human vascular system, especially coronary artery disease a leading cause of death.
Together with his wife, Katherine, Brud Lary contributed to many philanthropic organizations. His hobbies included flying, tennis, skin diving, snow skiing and white water rafting. Dr. Lary will be missed by everyone who enjoyed his inimitable brilliance, compassion and charisma. A memorial service will be held at Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove (3400 Devon Road, Miami, FL 33133) at 3 p. m. on Sunday, January 20, 2013. In lieu of flowers please make donations in memory of Dr. Brud Lary to the Alzheimer’s Association or charity of your choice.
