ANNE HOWE BROWN's Obituary
Anne Brown (nee Anne Howe Smith) passed away on November 14, 2016 after a protracted struggle with myelodysplastic syndrome (a disease of the bone marrow) at Miami Baptist Hospital.
Anne was born to Al and Helen Smith on December 21, 1942 at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital in Syracuse, New York. She grew up on Ryder Avenue in Syracuse and was educated at Most Holy Rosary, and graduated high school in 1960.
In the era when few women attended college, Anne matriculated to Syracuse University. She majored in education and graduated from SU in 1964. She received a Ford Foundation Scholarship and traveled to Hawaii to pursue a Master’s degree; life, however, had other plans for her and she abandoned the pursuit of a master's degree.
She returned from Hawaii to Upstate New York (Rochester) and began a 40 year career in teaching high school English and World History. During the ensuing years, she met and married her husband Glen Brown, Sr. (1933- 2000) and had three children- Glenn Jr., Christopher and Molly.
In 1977 Anne, and her family, moved to Miami, Florida where she spent the remainder of her life. In Miami, she quickly landed a job as a teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy where she taught numerous girls for 30 years. Lourdes was her passion and life's calling, and she had a profound effect on an innumerable cohort of young women.
Anne was an active parishioner and a Eucharistic Minister Mr. at St. John Neumann’s Church where she attended mass regularly for well over two decades.
A summary of her life is epitomized by her dedication to her family, her educational career and her spiritual service.
She is survived by her three children-Glenn Junior, Chris and Molly, her four grandchildren- Tyler Perez, Sebastian Perez, Jordan Perez and Ryan Brown. Also surviving Anne are her sister-in-law, Carol Smith, and her four nieces and nephew, Adriane Rodriguez, Kendra Smith, Jared Smith and Erica Smith. She had countless friends in the Valencia community in Kendall, in the faculty at Our Lady of Lourdes and in the St. John Neumann's Catholic Church.
A Wake Service will be held at St. John Neumann’s Church at 12125 SW 107th Ave. in Kendall on Friday, November 18th, 2016 at 12:00 Noon followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made on Anne's behalf to our Lady of Lourdes Academy Scholarship Fund.
