HUNTER
Anna L. (Thomas) passed away on January 8th, 2009. She was born in Detroit, MI, worked at Carboloy Co., a division of General Electric and manufacturer of Carboloy Bits (cutting tools). She started as a file clerk and worked up to become Assistant Supervisor of Sales Accounting. In 1943 she submitted a war slogan, Every “Bit” for Victory and received a letter from the War Production Board in Washington D.C. congratulating her on the slogan which was used on their letterhead. She moved to Washington D.C., registered with an agency and did part time work for various companies. Did volunteer driving for the American Red Cross and in 1952 was one of the drivers that was invited to a tea at Blair House by First Lady Bess Truman in appreciation for work done for the service-men. She was a member of National Presbyterian Church in Washington D.C. As a member of the Young Couples did volunteer work at Hospitality House which was owned and operated by the church and was used as a home away from home for the service-men that spent their week-ends their. The women of the church and the young couples served meals and furnished entertainment for the service-men. She served on several committees at the church. Moved to Jacksonville, FL and did volunteer work at Pinecastle School for retarded children. As a member of a Garden Club, was instrumental in getting a nursery to furnish shade trees for the school so the children could play outdoors and tend to their little gardens. Moved to Miami in 1959. Joined First Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables, served on several committees and became a Deacon and Elder. The Hunter’s purchased Todd’s Fruit Shippers in Coral Gables in 1962. Her husband Francis passed away in 1965 and she carried on the business by herself until 1995. Was a member of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, Coral Gables Business Leaders, American Business Women Association and was named Woman of the Year in 1979 by her Chapter. This award was given for education, business experience and community service. Was a member of Coral Gables Country Club Bowling League for many years. Instead of flowers suggest donations be made to favorite charity or First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables. Funeral Service 2pm Wednesday January 14th, 2009 in the Chapel of the First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables.
