Alfred D. Stewart's Obituary
Alfred D. Stewart, 91, of Miami, Florida, passed away on November 12, 2022.
Al was born in 1931 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania to Bernard and Trudi (Gertrude) Stewart, where he spent his early life. The family moved frequently, and in the late 1940s, relocated to Miami, Florida, where Al attended Miami Senior High School. He had a paper route and, when describing those days said: "Miami was so small, you could bicycle around the entire city in 25 minutes."
After high school, Al enlisted in the United States Air Force for four years, and served during the Korean War, in Guam and Okinawa, as an electronics specialist.
Once discharged, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Miami, and began working for the U.S Treasury Department, first as an IRS agent, and then as a Special Agent in Intelligence. While at Treasury, he investigated organized crime in South Florida and periodically provided protection to the sitting President, Richard Nixon, at his home on Key Biscayne. He also provided protection to Governor Ronald Reagan when he was in Miami for the 1968 Republican convention. After retiring from Treasury, Al opened a small business and worked as a private investigator.
Throughout his life, Al pursued his favorite interests including electronics, science, computer science, history, and foreign languages. Anyone who knew Al would likely know that his greatest passion and interest was his love of words, word play, and the English language. In the late 1980s, Al found his true calling as an English instructor at Miami-Dade Community College. He spent the next 28 years helping students develop their language skills and sharing his passion for the idiosyncrasies and peculiarities of English.
Al was predeceased by his brother, Mike Stewart. He is survived by his daughters Marta R. Stewart of Newburyport, MA; and Wende K. Stewart of Overland Park, KS; as well as his sister-in-law, Michelle Stewart of Hollywood, FL; niece, Denise Ramos of Boynton Beach, FL; and nephew, Brian Stewart of Hollywood FL.
