Dr. Albert Jorge-Rassi's Obituary
Dr. Alberto Jorge-Rassi, 74, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2018, surrounded by family and friends. He was born April 8, 1944 in Havana, Cuba, to Julian Rassi and Sophia Char of Lebanon. He completed high school in Cleveland where his older brother Wilfredo was doing his Psychiatristy residency.
In the early 1960s he moved to Miami when his parents came from Cuba. He joined the Army at 19 willing to risk his life fighting for his newly adopted country, which he loved. He initially worked at St Francis Hospital in Miami Beach as a surgical tech but many doctors and his family encouraged him to go to medical school. His two brothers were physicians and they too encouraged his pursuit of this noble profession. In1969 he applied and got accepted at the Medical school in Madrid, Spain. In January of 1973 during a hiatus from medical school he met the love of his life Vivian, our mother. They got married in August, left for Spain in September and she got pregnant with my older brother in October of the same year (way to go Dad). He graduated from the University of Madrid School of Medicine and Surgery in 1976 and from then on dedicated his life to helping others. He spoke 3 languages English, Spanish, and Arabic. He performed surgery at several hospital in the South Florida area including Victoria, Coral Gables, and UM hospital (formerly known as Cedars Medical Center). He had a passion for cars specifically classic ones from the 1950s. He has seven in his collection with one of the favorite being his first addition the Cadillac Eldorado Convertible from 1955. We will never forget the Sunday cruises with the top down in the "55" listening to oldies while his hair blew in the wind.
He practiced medicine as it was intended. Seeing people as patients and not customers. He was always willing to help. Performing countless minor surgeries and procedures for practically nothing and/or the good old fashion barter system. He used his skills as a surgeon to make people's lives better and provide a life for his family that they will always remember and be grateful for.
He touched many lives and was a great role model for his children and grandchildren, the pure meaning of a family man. Words cannot describe how much all who knew him will miss him. Most of all his family, his wife of almost 45 years, his sons Albert, Alexander and Christopher, his brother Rolando and his beloved grandchildren A.J. Nicole, Christopher, Julian Marcus and Sophia as well as his nieces and nephews. His presence on this earth will be greatly missed but his memory lives on in our hearts forever. Rest in Peace Dr. Alberto Jorge-Rassi
